Darlene Campbell was born and raised just ten minutes from downtown Boston, hence an affinity for all things Boston, including the Red Sox, Bruins, and Boston College. Despite being deep in Yankees-Rangers-Sabres territory, all three of her sons can name all the Red Sox greats, understand what winning the Beanpot means, and can recite the significance of Pesky’s Pole. She arrived in Ithaca for graduate school thinking that Ithaca would be a brief stint before an inevitable return to balmy Boston. The marriage of a local lad, three sons, and a house in Northeast later, the return to Boston has been slightly delayed. For the time-being, with the help of her second-grader Calum, she has established a small Boston sports fan enclave deep in Central New York while teaching biology at Cornell.
I am the mother of two kids. My son Erik is in middle school and Isa is in 4th grade at Northeast. This will be my fifth year on the board and my fourth year as Treasurer. I am also an Assistant Professor of Biology at Wells College. I teach genetics and molecular biology. My husband Hans and I have been in Ithaca for about 13 years. Our family enjoys playing board games, outside activities, and travel. We are all excited for another great year at Kids Count and Northeast!
Originally from China, Qiaojuan has lived in Ithaca since 2003. Here she resides with her husband, Huijun, and two sons, Stephen (age 11, a KC alumnus) and Tommy (8, a current KC student). She is the general manager of a research laboratory and has an active role in study coordination, mentoring students, safety training, directing technical staff, and dealing with administrative issues. Qiaojuan spends her spare time with family and loves to read and play badminton. She currently serves on the Program committee and looks forward to bringing her ‘outside-the-box’ approach to problem-solving.
I am a mother of two, my oldest is a graduate of the Ithaca School District and of Cornell University, my youngest is a third grader at Northeast Elementary. The after school program at Northeast has always been an integral part of my daughter’s school day, and when my son, Oliver was ready to start at Northeast I was happy to see that Kids Count was a thriving program enriching kids’ lives and making parents work day more manageable. I feel strongly about offering quality activities to our children outside of school hours and that is why it’s important to have Kids Count and I am glad I can serve on the Board of this worthwhile program. I have lived in Ithaca for the past 23 years, I have been teaching Italian at Cornell for about 20 years and I look forward to my next 2 years at Northeast.
I'm excited to be a member of the Kids Count Board for the 2016-2017 school year. My son, Louis, is a 5th grader and my daughter, Sonia, is a 2nd grader this year. We really enjoy the Kids Count activities and appreciate the wonderful staff. I am a school social worker in the Ithaca City School District. Our family loves hockey (playing and watching), traveling, and going to hear local outdoor music shows in Ithaca.
Verne and his wife Becca have lived in Ithaca for 10 years. Their sons Isaac (age 8 - third grade) and Ellis (age 5 - kindergarten) attend Northeast. Verne works for Executive MBA Programs in the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell.
